The Mentorship with Justine Malick
We are forever students. Sapphire Pilates is a space for exploration — of movement, of healing, and of the art of facilitation. We strive to create an environment where students and teachers alike can cultivate a mindful movement practice, encouraging each being to lean into the wisdom of their own selves.
The premise behind The Mentorship is simple and similarly rooted: to expand & to grow. The program will offer participants an opportunity to expand their knowledge of the technical & anatomical, their teaching skills, their ability to read a room, and to grow as a teacher, as a forever student of this work, as a person.

“Pilates is not just a series of exercises. Pilates is a concept. It's a philosophy”
⋄ Eve Gentry ⋄
A sapphire is a symbol of wisdom. At Sapphire Pilates, the invitation is to connect with the wisdom of the body.
Connecting to the wisdom of the body is the guiding principle behind each of the offerings at Sapphire Pilates — our classes, our private sessions, our comprehensive teacher training, and now The Mentorship. This program is appropriate for current teachers who are craving additional education and guidance as well as graduates of training programs that have not yet ventured into the public teaching world (and would like to!)
The Mentorship is a safe space for continued exploration and development — of the body, pilates, somatics, embodiment, and the art of facilitation. The inaugural program includes three modules each with the option to attend either in-person at Sapphire Pilates or virtually via zoom.
The Mentorship Program is composed of 3 main components:
The Mentorship
Module 1 ⋄ Expand
Module 2 ⋄ Integrate
Module 3 ⋄ Grow
The Mentorship is designed to be attended in its entirety by joining all three modules. While it is also possible to drop-in for individual modules, the program is intentionally structured so that the modules build and layer upon one another.
*Please note that while attendance is possible both in person and virtually, the sessions will not be recorded. Additionally, participation in The Sapphire Pilates Mentorship Program does not guarantee employment at Sapphire Pilates.
The Curriculum.
Module 1 — Expand
Learning new things.
In Expand, we are re-entering “sponge mode.” This module is all about absorption of new material. In an initial teacher training, everything feels new; so, it’s impossible to truly absorb it all. With a bit of time and space (and maybe even some teaching experience), our capacity to take in new information widens.
In order to teach with great detail and nuance, we must first learn how to feel with a high level of attunement, paving the way for further embodiment of the various movements, principles, exercises, and more. We will be revisiting familiar topics that were likely (hopefully!) introduced during your initial trainings — hip/pelvic mechanics, shoulder mechanics, the breath, etc. — and we will delve deeper.
We will also introduce and explore new ways of mapping and understanding the body through fascia flossing and Traditional Chinese Medicine meridians.
Really what we are expanding is . . . our capacity to listen. Learning how to listen to the bodies of our clients and students starts first and foremost with learning how to listen to our own.
Module 2 — Integrate
Weaving it together.
In Integrate, we are taking all that we have absorbed during the first module and weaving it into our teaching practice. If an embodied sense of the various movements, principles, and exercises expands our skill as detailed and nuanced movers, how do we then translate all that we are sensing and feeling and infuse it into our teaching? This is the module where we break that all down, articulating all of the component pieces that a teaching practice encompasses and integrating them into the whole.
We will talk about cueing (both verbal and tactile), common cues/corrections, and sequencing for sessions and classes. We’ll build class/session blueprints, too, that you’re welcome to use with your students and clients.
We will also be joined by Keaton Doniger, a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist who specializes in eating disorders, orthorexia and a spectrum of body-based anxieties. Keaton joins us to educate practitioners about the psycho-emotional tensions that can emerge in the pilates/fitness space. She is a graduate of The Lab Mat Teacher Training and an advocate for transformative teacher-student relationships.
Module 3 — Grow
Finding your voice.
In Grow, we are putting all that we learned in the previous two modules into action.
The voice is a powerful tool; it’s an instrument of instruction and radically impacts the overall class/session experience. We will dissect what it means to find your voice as well as steps to take to integrate these various principles and weave them into your teaching practice in a voice that is resonant and distinctly your own. We will focus especially on speaking and cueing from an embodied place while using language that is both sensitive and trauma-informed. We will also further explore hands-on adjustments and working with special populations.
Lastly, we will discuss a host of other aspects intrinsically connected to life in the pilates world. We will be joined by Grace Abbott of How to Go Freelance. Grace is a graduate of The Lab Pilates Teacher Training and has a decade’s worth of experience as a freelance creative and marketing consultant. She is a phenomenal resource when it comes to building a brand, establishing rates, navigating client relationships, managing finances, setting up contracts/invoices/taxes, mitigating self-doubt/fear/burnout, and so much more.

To expand
& to grow.
The Mentorship will offer participants an opportunity to expand — their knowledge of the technical & anatomical, their teaching skills, their ability to read a room. The program will also offer participants the opportunity to grow — as a teacher, as a forever student of this work, as a person.
Meet your mentor.
The Mentorship at Sapphire Pilates is led by Justine Malick.
Justine is inspired by movement and the body. Her teaching and holistic approach to this work is anchored by her desire to share movement tools that facilitate a sense of ease inside and out. Justine strives to bring a tenderness and strength to the work, acknowledging that all movement – even the most dynamic, challenging exercises – can simultaneously also be nurturing and nourishing.
Justine has been practicing pilates since 2004 and teaching since 2011. She started leading teacher trainings as an affiliate of The Lab Pilates in 2019.
Born and raised in LA, Justine was a competitive figure skater for over a decade. Pilates came into her life at a very young age, and it was an integral part of her off-ice training. Over the years, Justine has completed trainings through Body Arts Science International (BASI), YogaWorks, and Embodied Flow. She has also studied Somatics, Body Mind Centering (BMC), Deep Bodywork Massage, Resistance Flexibility Strength Training (RFST), Chinese Medicine, and Prenatal/Postpartum Corrective Exercise (PPCES).
The birth of Sapphire Pilates was inspired by Justine’s dream to create an inclusive space to teach, to practice, to cultivate community. The studio opened in February of 2023.
